A Night to Remember

Greetings Friends~

Tomorrow is the Grand Finale for Season 8 of the Biggest Loser. If you were going to watch any of the episodes from this year, this is the one to watch.

Why you ask?

Because you will get to see how all the contestants looked before they started, and how they look now. Not just the ones that are still competing for the title of Biggest Loser but everyone that has been voted out so far. You might think, "I've already seen their "after" segment." Nope, now you will get to see them at their best. The "at home" contestants are still vying for $100,000 so you can bet they haven't slacked up a bit.

Isn't it funny how that money, the $250,000 grand prize and the $100,000 at home prize, motivates the contestants? Not really... I think it is oddly sad.

How much is my life worth to me? $100,000? $250,000? $1,000,000? More? The truth is, it is certainly worth a lot. It's impossible to put a number on. And yet, it seems like people can be VERY motivated when there is ACTUAL money on the line but they can't be motivated when it is JUST saving or prolonging something as paltry as their life.

I have watched (and recorded) every show this season. I find it inspiring to watch the tenacity and strength that each and every one of the contestants exhibits, week after week. I think about it a LOT as I am pondering my food choices. I think about it a LOT as I am struggling to do 45 minutes on the elliptical or to swim laps for an hour. I tell myself as I am ready to GIVE UP, imagine if Jillian were here. Right in front of you, evil weakass Chet. Could you go that extra step? Could you go that extra 15 minutes? Could you give up the Yorkshire pudding for something that has less calories?

I suppose that you could accurately say that I am a Biggest Loser "junkie." When the winner is crowned tomorrow night, the season will be over. My journey will not. So, to get my fix of this wonderful weight loss competition, I will start watching the shows from the beginning. I will get to re-live all of the exciting weight loss again. Possibly, this will keep my batteries charged up until the next season or segment airs, later this year.

I find that I need to be motivated or inspired to do something. I am not only doing this for my family but also for myself. I believe as a FAT person that is often hard to be motivated, if it only for my sake. Afterall, I don't really believe in myself...I don't really believe I am worth the effort...and I certainly do not believe that I deserve to be skinny (Toni says... I shouldn't say skinny, I should say FIT).

My point is that I have to get over all the negative feelings that I have carried with me for so many years as a chubby dude. If I don't feel I'm worth it, then I will never change. Seeing the pride and happiness of all the Biggest Loser contestants at the finale makes me believe that there is a possibility that I am worth it.

This may be a little late as a use for that leftover turkey and carcass but if you have already made the stock and saved the meat, like I did, then you may enjoy this as a quick and hearty lunch or dinner. I am making this tonight for dinner.

Shopping Tips

Fred Meyer has the following items on sale thru next Saturday; Beef Flat Iron Steaks at $4.99 a pound (if you have never tried this, you should. It is one of our favorites and it cooks in 5 minutes on the George Foreman), assorted apples for $.78 a pound, Healthy Choice frozen entrees at 6 for $10, organic mini carrots, 1 pound bag for $1.25 each, organic pears for $1.29 a pound and turnips, carrots, parsnips and rutabagas (sounds like the start of a good fall soup) at 2 pounds for $1.

This blog, so far, has primarily been about my journey. I have hopes that someday others will be willing to participate in the weight loss and this blog. I appreciate those that read my posts but I need the advice, tips and suggestions of others. So do other people. Take the time to say "hello" on here. Share with others. Ask the other BIG people here to give you some tips on how to survive things...how to cope with food issues...how to get inspired.

Since there are only 13 followers, I know that I am not radically changing the world, but I would like to be a part of changing those that are reading. I believe if I can continue on my journey, set my small steps each day and continue to show progress, that I can make a difference, One Step at a Time.

I hope that you believe that YOU can make a difference also.

If you believe in a higher power, as I do, be it God, Allah, Buddha or otherwise, I ask that you spent a short minute (or more) tonight asking for help for those families of the slain police officers in Lakewood.

Weekend Update or Racing to the Finish Line

Greeting Friends~

This is your weekly reminder that I need your new weight on Monday. Don't forget to get in some exercise between now and then. It might make the difference between a loss and a gain.

Turkey Day has come and gone. Sniff, sniff, only 364 days left until my favorite holiday comes around again.

Dinner was a fine event. Turkey with all the trimmings. Pumpkin pie for dessert. I am happy to report that I managed to control myself (mostly). I had a small amount of stuffing with gravy but other than that I kept everything within limits. I did over do it with the olives, but in the greater scheme of things, I could have done much worse. I passed on the pie. Maybe some other day, when I weight a lot less.

Mrs. B dished up all the leftovers into containers which we are storing in the garage refrigerator, out of sight. I will take it to work on Monday along with the rest of the pie.

So things worked out pretty well. My knee has really been bothering me after being on it all Wednesday night and yesterday cooking. Mrs B was a trooper this morning and drug me to the gym. I sat for an extended time in the jacuzzi soaking my knee while she got in a good workout doing water aerobics. It feels much better now so I am hopeful that I can get in a workout on Saturday and Sunday. I'm sure that I need it because my salt intake with the ham, stuffing and olives has left me feeling bloated and heavy. It's turkey salads for me the rest of the weekend.

I hope that you all had a great holiday and, if you ventured out shopping this morning, that you all arrived back home in one piece.

Sometimes the holidays provide stress and distractions that can derail me from my objective. If I concentrate on what is important, like doing the things that give me reasons to feel better about myself, then it is easier to stay on the road to a successful outcome. Pick a small step right now and remember that you too can achieve your goal if you do it One Step at a Time.

Crossroads

Greetings Friends~

I am still recuperating from my cold. Getting sick has thrown my whole schedule off and since regularity is the key to my success, I am frustrated right now. I haven't been drinking enough water, I haven't felt like eating and I haven't worked out for the last two days. On top of that, when I got on the scale this morning, I am heavier than on Monday. Dieting is a fickle bitch. Needless to say, I am feeling down.

Being depressed is nothing new for me. I have struggled with it my whole life, off and on. Lately, I haven't encountered the blues because I have been staying so active that I really haven't had any time to slip into the blackness.

What to do? I think I will spend the evening doing what I love to do...getting ready for Turkey Day. I debated about going to the gym tonight. Nope, I'm going to get a head start on the cooking for tomorrow. I guess the gym will have to wait until Friday. I'll find out next Monday when I weigh in whether this was a smart decision or not.

Next week is the finale of the Biggest Loser show. I can't wait to watch so I can see how all of the contestants have done. I love seeing the changes people have made.

This is Week 10 for our group. My plan is to continue the weight loss tabulations for two additional weeks after this, for a total of 12 weeks. At that point, I will post the results and crown a Biggest Loser for the group.

As a weight loss group, we are at a crossroads. The future of the group after the 12 weeks is up to you. I will be continuing on my journey as will Mrs B. If you would like to continue, then let me know. Post a message on here, email or call. The decision to continue with a weekly weigh in format will be up to you.

When I started this, many people seemed interested. I'm not sure that interest is still there, only time will tell.

Recipe of the Day

Save this recipe as a starting point for your leftover turkey. Whip up a nice salad and get back on track. Substitute the turkey for the chicken and sub romaine for the iceberg. Vary all other ingredients according to your preferences. Enjoy!

My small step for today is to forget about my stresses and be happy. Life is too short to wallow in self pity. I have made good progress to this point and I am still committed to doing this journey One Step at a Time.

BTW, don't look for a post tomorrow. I with be in a turkey coma. When I awake, I will be concentrating on our "game plan" for Black Friday, while watching Mrs. B's favorite movie, It's a Wonderful Life. (Future blogs may be devoted to that subject.)  I hope to run into you sometime between 5-11 am.

Week 9 Results

Greetings Friends~

(Why does Bruce (Wayne) always get to drive? Because I'm on the phone asking directions.)

Here are the Week 9 results. Kudos to LaNae for being this week's Biggest Loser.

So how will I deal with the temptation of a succulent Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings?

I am going to limit myself to eating the stuff that is good for me like turkey, salad and vegetables. If I decide that I just can't live without something like a yeast roll or candied yams, then I will only eat a VERY small portion.

I am going to drink LOTS of water with my meal and eat slowly.

I am going to skip dessert. I like pumpkin pie but I don't LOVE it so there is no temptation to resist.

I am sending the fattening stuff, like mashed potatoes, gravy and stuffing home with guests. Anything that is leftover after they have taken their share, is going into the freezer. On Friday I will take this, along with the pumpkin pie, to work for co-workers to consume on Monday.

If I don't have it in the house, I can't eat it.

I'm still battling this cold. I took lots of cold medicine today and naps so I believe I am getting better. I really want to get back to work tomorrow.

Holy Pigout, Batman

Greetings Friends~

I will keep this short because I am sick with a cold...my node ith runnin'...and my trout herts...

Thanksgiving week...am I the only one terrified of what this week will bring? If you are REALLY trying to stay on track to lose weight each week, I wager you are. For others, this just may be a dream come true. Thanksgiving, the best meal of the year.

I usually cook, because I love doing so. When the meal finally comes together and it is time to eat, I am so tired that I am lucky to finish one plate. The rest of the afternoon is a tryptophan blur. It's all I can do to stay awake long enough to watch some TV, dish up leftovers for all the guests to take home and then wish them well on their journey.

What time is it Boys and Girls? It's lay on the couch and take a nap time! When I wake up from a short nap at 7pm or so, then the real meal begins. I manipulate Mrs B into hauling ALL the food back in from the garage refrigerator so I can start the real meal...and this goes on clear till Sunday. The pattern is...EAT...NAP...EAT...WATCH TV...EAT...NAP... you get the picture.

I bet I'm not the only closet eater here. You know who you are. Self conscious about people watching the FAT guy or girl eating so we wait until they are gone.

How will I deal with that this year? Tune in tomorrow. Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.

Shopping Tips

Fred Meyer has the following items on sale; milk or orange juice 1/2 gal. 4 for $5, Knudsen Sparkling apple cider 4 for $5, FM frozen vegetables assorted varieties 12 oz for $1 each, and extra large eggs for $.99 dozen.

I'm heading to bed so I can try and shake this cold. I want to make it to work tomorrow so J. doesn't have to shoulder the burden. Wish me luck.

Resisting Temptations

Greeting Friends~

Today I spent the majority of my day grocery shopping. It is much harder now to shop because I have to look at healthier choices instead doing my usual grab and go.

Now instead of reaching for the Nalley's Cheddar Cheese Chili, I look at the calorie and fat savings by switching to turkey chili.

If I am shopping for soup, I now look at the lower fat or lower sodium. Ditto for chicken broth. Low sodium canned vegetables are now flying into my cart.

I think you understand how my mind is working these days. It is better to take time to read the labels now then to wonder why I didn't lose as much later.

I am still struggling to stop eating beef. I don't know if that will ever change. I am a sucker for a nice flat iron steak, cooked to perfection on the George Foreman, and smothered in mushrooms. I do try to make many of my meals either chicken or seafood but I am extremely picky about the fish I eat. Salmon is about it at this point because I don't like strong "fishy" tasting fish. I compromise by trying to eat a couple of albacore tuna salads a week.

Instead of buying hamburger today, I purchased ground turkey, Italian flavored  . There is an idea on the back of the package for zucchini stuffed with this turkey and covered with spaghetti sauce and mozzarella cheese. I am going to be giving that a try in the next couple of days.

I try to speed down the aisle that contains the au gratin potatoes, Rice-a-roni, Oreos, candy, etc. It is simpler if I don't have that stuff at home to tempt me.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas soon upon us, I will be starting to make my annual holiday treat bags to give out, filled with kettle corn, handmade candies, cookies, seasoned pretzels and more. The real temptation will be to keep from licking my fingers and sampling the finished product.

Some of you would recommend that I just skip the holiday bags altogether or to make only healthy stuff to give out. Nope, I need to be able to resist temptation when it is before me, so I will be proceeding as usual.

We'll see how successful I am at resisting temptation.

We went to water aerobics and got our big butts kicked again today. It felt great. Tomorrow is my last chance workout so I am really going to pour it on. I am loving life right now because I am heathier and have more energy. I took my blood pressure today at Group Health. It was 97/58. If this keeps up, I think I will be able to get off that blood pressure medicine. This is all possible because I am doing the program, sticking with the program, and living the program, One Step at a Time.

Weekend Update or Workout Whenever and Wherever Possible

Greetings Friends~

(Hey, is that guy balancing on his head or is he flipping me the bird?)

Here is your weekly reminder that I need your new WEIGHT on Monday. I hope that you make the most of your weekend by getting in a couple of Last Chance workouts so you can impress yourself and others with your progress.

I know that there are several members and followers that do not have gym memberships. Do not despair. I figure if you are reading this then you either have a computer or some type of hand held device with internet access.

There are gazillions of websites available online that specialize in exercising and fitness plans.

The other night I joined a new (free) one called HealthVault by Microsoft. This is much the same as my favorite FitDay, with several exceptions. On HealthVault you are able to choose a variety of workouts specifically for your individual needs. There is cardio, strength training, etc. The coolest part of the site is once you have chose your workout plan, it configures the types of exercise you should do, the amount of weights and the repetitions. Bonus...bonus...they have pictures explaining each move. So, you can set up a plan like I did and the only equipment needed are some hand weights. Sally once mentioned to me that they sell these at Marshall's in Lacey for a VERY reasonable price. If you invested $20 (approximate) then you would have the two sets of weights needed to do 8 different exercises. here is the link http://www.healthvault.com/

I'm getting to be an old geezer so here is another site that has a superb fitness and exercise section. It is AARP. QUIT LAUGHING. Hopefully, you all will be there someday. Here is the link AARP
While attaching this link I found an article there that is right in line with today's subject. Read it here Frugal Workouts

If neither of these is your cup of tea, do a Google search and you will find hundreds of  pages of worthwhile sites. The important thing is that you look to find one that fits your needs.

I believe that the key to any successful weight loss program involves dieting AND exercise. It doesn't have to be GYM exercise. ANY exercise will do the job. This combination will certainly increase your ability to lose weight better, and faster, while improving your overall health condition.

Recipe of the Day

With all the rainy weather lately, this sounds like a great way to warm up after being outside. http://www.recipezaar.com/Weight-Watchers-Crock-Pot-Chicken-Chili-227391

The holidays will soon be here. You either love this time of year or you hate it. Either way, be careful because there are hidden traps abounding like holiday parties, cookie platters at work, rich and fattening meals, and more. I don't plan to skip all these because that would be kind of a drag, but I do plan on using moderation. My small steps for this weekend are to stay active thru workouts, do chores around the house AND no succumbing to temptation. I am getting healthier (and smaller) everyday because I remember that this works One Step at a Time.

Life Can Have Its' Rewards

Greetings Friends~

My favorite part of the Biggest Loser show is when they air the makeover episode each season. Above, you will see Rebecca Meyer before, and as she appeared in the makeover show. Quite a change. Even more impressive is how she looks now. If you didn't catch her on Leno on Tuesday night, here is a link to the interview. Rebecca Leno Interview

She is now down to a svelte 157 pounds from a starting weight of 279, a loss of 122 pounds. Wow, wow, wow!

Her success is proof that people can change. I choose to use her success as inspiration for my journey. She is half (and then some) my age but I don't think that really matters. Maybe it will take me longer to lose because I have that "old" people metabolism, but I will lose, if I keep doing my small steps.

I believe that we all need some "makeover" things in our lives as we lose weight. I know that I have lost 10% so far but I don't think a FULL makeover now would be quite as impressive as a hundred pounds from now. BUT, maybe something as simple as a new shirt or a new pair of pants would be enough to make me see the change. Plus, it is a reward for work well done.

I know myself better than anyone else does and I will tell you that gratification is my thing. That's one of the many reasons I look like I do. That being said, when I drop some weight I think it is important to reward myself when I meet a pre-set goal. And, by reward, I don't mean a big, fat cheeseburger and fries. I mean something of value that will make me happy. Like a new gym bag. When I reach my next 10% loss, that's what I am going to do. Treat myself to a really cool bag with all the bells and whistles. Then each time I see that bag, it will reinforce my success.

You should each set a short term goal and think about a makeover or goal reward. Once you achieve that goal, go splurge. I know I will, because I deserve it.

Recipe of the Day

For those of you that enjoy salads, this recipe sounds like a winner. If you want to reduce the calorie count, substitute light dressing and/or skip the artichoke hearts and croutons. This would also be very good with leftover turkey next week. http://www.recipezaar.com/Tuna-Cobb-Salad-87605

After my post yesterday, several people contacted me who were concerned about my 7 pound Vegas gain. I appreciate your concern. I did a quick weigh in at lunch today to see if my Last Chance work outs have been successful. Rest assured, I am back on track. At this point, I have lost those 7 pounds plus a little. Thanks for your concern. I'm not quitting the journey over a small bump in the road.

Life is so much easier when I work at making it better instead of wallowing in my self pity. I know that there are things in my life that I can not control. My obesity, and my weight loss, are in my control. Concentrate on the things you can change, One Step at a Time, and your life will follow.

Boy, Can I Relate to That

Greetings Friends~

Eight short weeks ago that was me on the couch...seriously. I was in a trough of despair over my health and obesity. I spent most of my spare time horizontal, eating, watching TV and sleeping. Our couch now has a permanent impression of my ass. I kid you not.

What changed? I think I started changing when I figured out that there is going to be another season of Biggest Loser on and the time to lose is now. I didn't want to be watching another finale show, thinking to myself how I should have started this 12 weeks ago. As I've said before, I was sick of being fat.

I know that this addiction is just as fatal as alcohol or drug use. It may actually be worse because it is easier for me to rationalize. I mean, everybody has to eat, don't they?

I am only a short distance down the path of a very long trip and here is the amazing part. Where I once had NO motivation, I now have TONS. It isn't even conceivable right now that I would lay around on the couch all day doing nothing when I could be working around the house or at the gym. Why is that? I think I'm getting accustomed to being active. My body has more energy and there is less pain involved now.

The more I lose, the better I feel. The more I lose, the more confidence I have. The more I lose, the more I want to lose. It is like the opposite of a self defeating spiral. This is a self accomplishing spiral, upwards.

I gained seven pounds last week. S-E-V-E-N!! Holy Crap-a-rooni! When I got on that scale Monday morning, it was DEPRESSING. Not only disappointing that I gained so much but now I will have to lose that and more before I can post a loss on here. My first thought was to quit. Screw it. It's all over. The fat man is singing. But then I remembered "if you want to dance, you gotta pay the band". I ate those curly fries (which, by the way were not anywhere near as good as I thought they would be) so now I need to pay for it. Quit whining, Chet, and get back on track. Nobody likes a quitter.

Shopping Tips

Anyone that knows me, knows that I have a few favorite things in life. One is to go grocery shopping and another is to cook. So, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because I get to do tons of both. Here are the sales for Thanksgiving.

My small step for today is to do another Last Chance workout at the gym tonight. The more I lose this week, the better, since Turkey Day is always a challenge. I would like all you Travelers to post a comment with your hints for others about lower calorie alternatives to traditional holiday fare. Remember, doing one small thing like substituting 99% fat free chicken broth for the butter in your mashed potatoes, is like money deposited into your weight loss account. Today is a new day so do your small step and take things One Step at a Time.

Week 8 Results

Greetings Friends~

Here are the results for Week 8. Kudos to Lee for being this week's Biggest Loser. I guess doing Zoomba and having Stan gone hunting is worthwhile.

Here are the group results showing progress for the last two months. Kudos to Rebecca who has now passed me for the title of Biggest Loser overall. Way to go! Exercising with your Mom must be helping.

The group as a whole has lost 181 pounds which equals 4.7 %. This means we have lost a whole healthy person! Now, lets start working on losing another person or two from our torsos.

Today I am going to write about things that we all know concerning dieting. I am doing this because I need a little refresher. Right about this point I can usually predict that my motivation is wavering so I am going to attempt to recharge my personal inspiration.

  • I should drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day, at a minimum.
  • I should eat a healthy breakfast, a morning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner and an evening snack if needed.
  • I should exercise for 30 minutes, at a minimum, several times a week. The activity or exercise that I get should be different from day to day otherwise my body gets lazy.
  • I should restrict my caffeine and alcohol.
  • I should eat more fish than beef each week. Even canned tuna is a great source of protein.
  • I should take multi-vitamins on a daily basis.
  • I should pre-plan and prepare my meals in advance. This will not only save me time but the temptation to eat something less health will be lessened.
  • I should put eating right and exercise above less healthy activities like watching TV and napping.
  • I should set a small step goal for myself each day and strive to complete it.
Those are the things that I must do to continue to be successful at One Step at a Time but there are also things that I should not do as well.

  • I should not make excuses for my bad behaviors.
  • I should not tell myself that I can cheat today because I will do better tomorrow.
  • I should not allow the behaviors of others to dictate my behaviors and emotions.
  • I should not allow myself to forget how much I hate being fat and out of shape.
  • I should not think that just because I have made some gains in my journey that I am at my destination, because I am not.
  • I should not forget that I have diabetes which can still kill me.
  • I should not be impatient with my progress. It took me years to get this big, it may take years to get smaller and stay that way.
  • I should not equate my success with the success of others.
I am now two months into this. Two whole months. The time has gone by in a hurry and so have the pounds. I'm glad that I am healthier now than I was sixty days ago.

Recipe of the Day

First of all, concerning the recipes that I post from Recipezaar. When you go to the recipe link, make sure that you read thru the reviews from those that have made the dish. Frequently you will see a pattern to the comments such as, add less sugar or add more spices. The recipes that are posted are a starting point. If the reviews say that it was perfect as stated, then give it a try. Otherwise, read the reviews and decide whether the writer has given you an idea about how to improve the recipe.

That being said, here is a recipe that you can tweak to meet (or meat) your own personal preferences for pizza but as a healthy alternative to standard recipes.
http://www.recipezaar.com/Weight-Watchers-Pita-Pizza-230254

My small step for today is to get in a vigorous workout before I watch the Biggest Loser. For all you members, if you seem to be at a plateau or just plain stalled, in your weight loose journey, try doing some exercise and healthy eating for just ONE day. Once you have accomplished that, you can work on the following day. Losing weight is easier if you work at it today and do it One Step at a Time.

There's No Place Like Home

Greetings Friends~

There is something quite comforting in returning to familiar surroundings after a trip. It is great to get back to reality, to get back to sensible food choices at home, to get back to friends and family AND, I hate to admit it, to get back to work.

I am a person well suited to a regular routine. Now that I am home I can slide back into my groove. Cook the meals, go to the gym, monitor my food intake, have one drink per week, have one cup of black coffee each day and coffee with cream on the weekend.

Additionally, I think it is safe to say that while there is stress at home and at work, these are stresses that are known to me. When I travel, I am a bundle of nerves. Carry on or checked baggage? Do my socks haver holes in them? Will I make the shuttle? How much do I tip the driver? Is there a coffee maker in the room? Do they REALLY want $6 for a latte? I think you can see what I mean.

At home I have a regular routine. I get up at the same time, leave for work at the same time, eat lunch at the same time. On and on and on. The stress about my schedule and activities is controllable. If I am short for time this morning then I know I'd better change something tomorrow or the stress will continue.

I am happy to be home where I have more control about my surroundings. If you have stress in your daily life, take a moment to analyze it and see if you can come up with a solution for alleviating it. I believe we each should know by now that stress in our life not only causes us to binge eat but it also slows our weight loss progress. Throw that stress aside and we find our lives running much smoother.

This is our eighth week Travelers. I know that I didn't make my goal for this week. In fact, I fell off the wagon. The thing is, I can choose to continue the road that takes me back to 334 pounds or I can get right back up on the horse and ride in the right direction. My choice is to get back on the horse. Many others assembled here are losing hope and gaining weight. Today is the time to realize that it is a whole week until the next weigh in. This is a new week, a new beginning. Make it count, One Step at a Time.

Saturday Leaving Las Vegas

Greetings Friends~

It is a good thing that I worked out for six weeks before I got here otherwise I would have never made it through the week for all the walking. I swear that I must have walked close to five miles a day since I have been here. My poor feet are telling me that it is time to go home and soak them in the jacuzzi.

While I got lots of exercise, I fear that overall my eating has been poor at best. We had a delicious dinner at Del Frisco's last night. We walked part of the way there which was funny because when we got ready to leave, after blowing a couple of hundred dollars on dinner, the waiter gave me an odd look when he asked if we wanted a taxi. Nope, we are riding the bus (in all our finery).

We didn't eat sparingly but we did eat things like salad, vegetables and meat, but only sampled the potatoes. Mrs. B did say after trying their famous lemon cake for dessert, that the next time she gets married, she is serving THAT cake.

I sure hope that the rest of you have been making up for my excess. Oh well, for me, vacation only comes once a year.

Weekend Update or When is the Next Bus?

Greetings Friends~

Here is your weekly reminder that you still have a couple of days to workout and eat right. Remember to get me those new weights on Monday!

Kudos to Lee for doing her latin aerobics again this week. Keep it up!

My dogs are killing me and I've walked a gazillion miles but it has all been fun.

The highlight of last night was the Terry Fator show. This guy is phenomenal and his show was the best. We sat third row center. Mrs. B was laughing all the way through it.

Here is the best thing about Terry Fator. He spent the last 20 years chasing his dream. Back water towns, high school auditoriums and state fairs. Finally, he made it big by winning America's Got Talent last year so now he is the head liner at the Mirage and his tickets are hard to come by. He is just a regular guy. After his show started, he stopped for a moment and said that everyone there should take as many pictures and videos as they wanted. Rules be damned, he said. Nowhere else in Vegas will they let you do this. Very impressive. After the show he encouraged the audience to visit his store, explaining that ALL profits on sales of items are being donated to U.S. servicemen and the families of those that have died in the war, even MORE IMPRESSIVE.

This gives me hope, that as long as I continue to chase my dream of small steps to better health, that I will someday make the big time (of thinness).

I haven't lost any weight and more than likely have gain a little but it has been worth it. Tonight is our big finale dinner as Del Frisco's which is supposed to have the best steaks in town. I am really looking forward to it. I will be passing on the really carb heavy side dishes and concentrating on the steak. I did promise Mrs. B that we could split a slice of their famous six layer lemon cake. I'll have a couple of bites and then push it away.

Looking forward to returning home and getting back to the gym. We may need to stay up all night to get in the remainder of our places to see and pictures to take but I'm ready.

Not as Young as I Used to Be

Greetings Friends~

It is a little after 3 pm and I just got up. Well, I actually got up at 11am, ate a snack and then crawled back into the big cushy king sized bed. Mrs. B kept me up till 4 am last night and I was exhausted. There is only so much sight seeing, walking and nightlife that this old man can take. So, I sent Mrs. B off to her favorite casino so I could recuperate.

We must have walked a good five miles yesterday. Toward the end of the day my knees were feeling it. Now that I have lost some weight, my knees seem to last longer but I do have my limits. I hope that the smaller I get, the better my knees will be.

Last night we went to the Ellis Island Casino and Brewery which is MY favorite place in Vegas. I will tell you right now that my diet went by the wayside (kind of). I just could not resist the HUGE 22 oz beers for $1.50 each. Mysteriously, those glasses kept appearing at our table! We had the bbq for dinner. As far as I am concerned, it is the best I've ever had. I did limit myself to only the ribs, pushing aside the two ears of corn, the beans and the coleslaw. Small step but a step nonetheless.

I find that I get fuller much sooner which is a good thing. If I eat slowly, then I am likely to push away from the table faster. Also, when I am full, I either have the waiter take the plate away or have it boxed for later. This way I am less likely to over endulge.

I'd better cut this short and go find how much trouble Mrs. B is causing. By the way, we have taken some great picture, especially the one of Mrs. B and Elvis last night. I found him hiding in a bar. Go figure.

Old Habits Die Hard

Greetings Friends~

Hello from Sin City where the sun is shining, the buses are slow and it is a several block walk to any place.

We got up this morning and headed straight to the pool. The water was a soothing 83 degrees. I swam for about a half hour while Mrs B did water aerobics. I was pretty tired from the flight yesterday and the full night of frivolity that followed.

I can tell that my food addiction is going to be tested here. Everywhere you go there is spectacular bistros, tantalizing buffets and top notch restaurants. Last night at the Nascar bar at the Sahara I discover that they have a Man vs. Food Challenge. They offer a 6 pound burrito that is 24" long. If you can eat it in 1-1/2 hours, it is free. You also get a cool t-shirt and your picture on the wall for all to see.

I looked at that burrito and thought, I can do that. I can do it FOR SURE. The thing is, as much as I want to try it, I know that I shouldn't. Well, at least right now. Might be fun when I'm a 160 pound strong man...but not now.

We went out to a late breakfast last night. While I didn't necessarily eat "diet" food, I did push away the fantastic looking hash browns (okay, AFTER a couple of bites but whose counting?) Today we toured Ethel M's Chocolates. Her and her husband, Frank Mars, started the Mars Chocolate Co. in Tacoma, Wa. I turned down all the free samples including the sugar free stuff. I told the lady that I'd rather not get started. For lunch we went to Roberto's Mexican Restaurant, where we ate well but not like in the past. I ate alot less.

We are walking all over so I hope that this helps with the added calories that we are taking in.

I apologize for typing errors here. This is Mrs B's laptop. Obviously I can't type as well on here as at home.

Week 7 Results or Leaving on a Jet Plane

Greetings Friends~

Here are the Week 7 Results. Congratulations to the five of us that posted a loss. Kudos to Susan for being this week's Biggest Loser and also to Rebecca for going over the 10% mark. Way to go people. I hope that the rest of the crowd is able to post a loss next week. The way to do this is by taking small steps, not NO steps.

I am tired and, by the time you read this, I will be jetting my way to Sin City. It has been awhile since I've had a chance to recharge my batteries.

I have found that we all have our threshold for how much of life's stress that we can take. Usually, mine is about 12 months. Thank goodness it is time for me to get away.

I made my goal (barely). I certainly wish that I could have posted a five pound loss but losing two pounds is definitely good. I have lost 35 pounds to date and I have a very long way to go. Here is the thing Poppits, I don't really mind that my journey will be so long.

I am physically stronger now than I was a mere seven weeks ago. This has given me mental strength. Now I know that I can do this long hard journey.

I have lots of small steps that you will certainly hear about in the future. Now I will tell you about my BIG goal. I want to be at 199 by my birthday on May 3, 2010. That is a substantial chore to accomplish but I now believe that I have to tools and desire to do it. Three pounds a week will do it. I know with enough determination and effort that I will get there.

It gives me hope to know that as long as I continue to take small steps, someday I will achieve what has so far alluded me...maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Stay strong Traveler and you will get to the place that you desire.

What Does it Take to become a Biggest Loser?

Greetings Friends~

For those of you that watch the Biggest Loser, the two people in the picture are very familiar to you. They are Bob and Jillian. For those of you that don't watch the show, who are struggling with a weight problem, you SHOULD.

This show is all about a group of seriously overweight individuals who are competing to lose weight each week. Sure, there is some soap opera aspects to the show. Sure, each season there are more and more commercial plugs woven into the show itself, for things like Brita water filters, Jennie-O turkey and some brand of sugarfree gum. Sure, the longer the show goes on, the heavier the contestants get. Sure, Bob and Jillian are extreme and sometimes, down right rude and mean.

But, there are good things about the show as well, that everyone needs to see at least once. The contestants working their asses off in the gym...people larger than you and I...who get out there and do it...each episode. Training tips, food and cooking segments, and, best of all, the "after" segment, are contructive and inspiring.

The thing that makes this such a good show is that it demonstrates to the world that obese people can change. That they can lose a tremendous amount of weight.

I know that those that have watched the show may be saying, "of course they lose weight. They have trainers, doctors, exercise equipment and good food provided for them. Who wouldn't lose weight?"

The important thing that the show has proven season after season is that even those people that get sent home early can lose a tremendous amount of weight when they work at it. Often the people who go home are losing as much weight as the ones that stay on the Biggest Loser campus.

These people go home where they deal with the same problems that you and I do. They have family responsibilities. They have jobs. They have no Bob and Jillian. And, they continue to succeed in dropping the pounds.

The VERY best part of the episode is the "after" segment that shows how much they have changed and how good they look. This is my favorite part because it inspires me to continue on my journey. If they can do it, so can I.

Do me a favor and tune in at least once. I think you will be glad you did.

Walking in the Rain

Greetings Friends~

I must say that the last 24 hours sure has been wet. Everywhere I go, there are large puddles of water across the road. Parking spots close to the gym or store entrances are scarcer then skinny people at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Nonetheless, instead of laying on the couch and watching TV, I made myself get out of the house and do something useful.

True to my word, I joined Mrs B for water aerobics this morning at 9 am. I have to say that I was skeptical about the benefits of the class. Don't misunderstand, I've done water aerobics before but it just never seems like a workout. The instructor is an older obese gentleman named Charles. The idea that he's in worse shape then me wasn't a confidence builder. I have sat in the jacuzzi soaking, after a workout, and observed the class in action. It never appeared too strenuous.

Holy Crap!  That old guy (and Mrs. B) put me thru my paces. Between the two of them, I got a real workout. I'm thankful that I did it WITH her because she explained each set of movements to me so I didn't feel like a total dunce. After 60 minutes of that, I most assuredly discovered a bunch of muscles that I didn't know existed. I walked up the steps to get out of the pool, and WHAM, my muscles screamed "ouch".

I think I'll be finding time to fit this class into my schedule each week. It was a good workout and only a couple of the routines hurt my knees. The nice thing about water aerobics is that you can substitute another manuever when that happens. The point is to keep moving.

Weekend Update or Why Do I Do What I Do?

Greetings Friends~

This is your weekly reminder to get me your results no later than Monday evening. I will be gone next week so my plan is to post the Week 7 Results mid-day on Tuesday. As always, those that I don't hear from will receive a zero for the week.

I am hovering around the 300 mark. When I got married, I weighed 157 pounds. When Lil' Bit came along, I weighted 175 pounds. From that point on it was like I won the Mega Ball of Weight Gain contest. I have bounced between a high of 340 and a low of 199 for the last 30 odd years. I have lost and gained these same 150 pounds quite a few times. I really appreciate what Rebecca said to me recently. "We have no problem losing weight. We know how to do the diet thing and be successful. It's the keeping it off part that we haven't figured out yet".

Why do I do this to myself? In 2005 I lost a LOT of weight. Over 100 pounds. That 2005 group picture in our office haunts me. I hate it. It is another reminder of what a failure I am. The WHY or the HOW of this destructive behavior does not evade me.

I could bore you to death with a lot of psycho babble about my youth and how living in a welfare house contributed to my feelings of inadequacies. To that I say, hogwash. It is my belief that there comes a time in each of our lives when we have to take responsibility for our own actions. Don't get me wrong, that welfare experience may have been instrumental in why I got fat originally but it certainly isn't the reason that I'm fat now. (If the word fat offends you, my apologies. It doesn't offend me, it describes me).

Again, why do I do this to myself? The answer is...it is a habit...just like smoking is a habit. (I love the new commercial that is about smoking where the guy steals a UPS-like van and drives off with it , just so he can have a smoke. He returns it when he is done with his cigerette.) The idea behind this is that whenever a smoker gets in their car, the first thing they do is light up. It is a habit. I would be willing to bet you a $1000 that if you asked Mrs. B the following questions, she would easily answer you correctly.

Q- You are in the drive-thru at Jack in the box with Chip. What will he order?
A- Two Jumbo Jacks and two large orders of fries.

Q- You are in the drive-thru at McDonalds with Chip. What will he order?
A- A 20 piece nugget and two large orders of fries.

Q- You are in the drive-thru at Taco Bell with Chip. What will he order?
A- 10 hard tacos and 10 soft tacos.

Q- What is Chip's favorite coupon in the Entertainment Book?
A- The 2 for 1 Lucky Eagle Buffet coupon.

Q- Chip is cooking Thankgiving dinner for 20 people. How many people will his food actually feed?
A- 40 with LOTS of leftovers (especially black olives).

Do I see a pattern here? Yes. What is the reason I eat like this? Because I am a glutton. In case you didn't catch that, I'll say it a little louder. I AM A GLUTTON. Why lie about it? I love food. I live for my next meal. I travel for food. Hell, half the time I dream about food. The why part really isn't rocket science. It's all because it is a habit.

When I eat the quantities listed above, the last thing I want to do is a workout or go for a walk. When I am lethargic after consuming this amount of food, the only thing I want to walk to is the refrigerator to get a snack. Go figure.

Now I am trying to change those habits. On November 16 when I weigh in, I will see how successful I was in fighting my gluttony while on vacation. I have some ideas, lists and plans of how I can be successful in Vegas while still having a good time. Stay tuned to this same Bat Channel for details next week.

This salad looks delicious. Feel free to substitute the ingredients in the salad fixings. I think the dressing is probably the key component. You could substitute mozzarella for the feta or black (or green) olives for the kalamata. Let me know how you like it.

I don't believe that all things in my life are pre-destined nor do I believe that all things are out of my control. I believe that I have the ability to overcome my morbid obesity if I take small steps to improve my habits and behaviors. I am living proof that it can be done One Step at a Time.

Remember, you have today, Saturday and Sunday to work out. There is time left to make your weigh in results positive or negative for Monday. I know that I am going to be working real hard towards a good loss. I hope you are doing the same.

A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned or A Stitch in Time Saves Nine

Greetings Friends~

I really love to save money and time. Why? Seems like the answer is obvious, to save it. Nope, that's not the reason. If a movie costs $9.50 for admission and I use my coupon to lower the price to $7.00, that $2.50 savings almost NEVER goes into the bank. When I say that I like to save money, what I mean is I want to get the biggest bang for my buck. I want to be able to use that $2.50 towards a large diet soda at the concession stand that I wouldn't otherwise splurge on.

Time is the same way. If I make 2-3 days worth of salad fixings and store them in the refrigerator, then I have saved the time it would ordinarily take to make those other salads later. Using the Ziploc Zip and Steam bags has also saved me some time. What used to take me 15-30 minutes in my steamer is now accomplished in 5 minutes tops. Purchasing a Brita water pitcher at Costco has saved me money on all those cases of bottled water that I used to buy and now I don't have to take the time to sort and recycle the bottles.

Here is how dinner usually works for us. I grab the salad container and put the mix into a bowl for Mrs B and myself. Add some dressing and some of the salad shrimp I previously thawed out and they are complete. I turn the George Foreman grill on to preheat it. A couple of minutes later, I open the grill and put in some chicken, beef or fish. Then I assemble a bag of broccoli, and/or a bag of carrots, or any other vegetable. Into the microwave with the first bag of vegetables for 4 minutes. By the time that the meat is done, I remove the Zip and Steam bag of broccoli and start the asparagus. The meat is now resting. When the last bag of steamed goodness is complete, I assemble the plates and in typical waiter fashion, serve Mrs. B.

Start to finish, the entire meal takes approximately 15-20 minutes at the most. Look at all the time I have saved that I can now use for other things. Also, this allows me to get a home cooked meal on the table sooner, so we aren't eating at 9:00 at night.

Maybe I can use that extra time to write a new post. Maybe I can use that time to pack my gym bag for tomorrow. Maybe I can use that extra time to make my breakfast and lunch for tomorrow. Maybe I can use that time to call a friend or family member and catch up. Maybe I can do ALL OF THE ABOVE.

I like saving money on purchases because I can stretch my dollar, which allows me purchase more. I like to save time because it frees me up to do other activities that would not otherwise get done.

Give it a try. You may find your life getting less stressful because of the time and money you have saved. I know I do.

The Fork Ran Away with the Spoon

Greetings Friends~

Rebecca sent me a short email to let me know that she joined the gym that our mother uses. I think this will be beneficial to her and Mom. They can now be workout buddies. I'm not looking for laughs here. I think it is easier to do almost all things when we do it together. She mentioned that she doesn't know much about the weight machines. I don't either...nor, at this point do I have a desire to. Who knows, maybe sometime in the near future my curiosity will overcome my fear and I'll have someone show me how to use those funny looking contraptions. I think I'll wait because right now I'd look pretty odd wearing the leather weight lifter belt with this stomach. Hmm...does this belt make my stomach look fat? It's not the belt, Dude.

I may have mentioned this before so please excuse my Sometimers. For things to become a habit or routine, I often joke that I have to do it 21 times. I got that from the Oprah show...I wasn't watching it...really...it just happened to catch my eye as I was channel surfing during a commercial. Anyway, it applies. If I do a thing, one or two times, it really hasn't become a habit. But, if I do it everyday, then it becomes part of my routine.

One Step at a Time is responsible for many changes in my routine. If you read back through the postings, you will see the things I have done to lessen the burden on my daily routine. I am glad that the "new" me has found ways to make my life healthier and at the same time, less stressful. I hope that you can find at least one thing, like keeping track of how many bottles of water that you have drank today, that contributes to making your life better.

Week 6 Results

Greetings Friends~

Here are the Week 6 Results. Congratulations to all who lost and also to those that did not gain this week, especially my sister Rebecca who had a great week. Ladelle is the deserving recipient of this week's gallon bag of Black River Blues blueberries. Kudos to her for kicking it up a notch this week.

The majority of my posts are about myself with a little of you thrown in. Today will be different. Today I would like to speak to those of you that have now been doing this for awhile, some for the entire six weeks.

What is the problem? Weeks ago you were excited about doing this but now that seems to have changed. Many members appear to have forgotten what their desires were a mere six weeks ago or less.

No one in this group, or the world for that matter, is immune from life's down turns, pitfalls and hazards. Everyone one of us who has used food as a crutch, has done so (mostly) during the bad times. So, if you are going to continue to put yourself in a negative situation then obviously you are setting yourself up for failure...at least that day. When we fail and feel "blue", what do we do? Eat, Baby, Eat...then probably...sleep, sleep sleep.

Here is what I would like to point out to each Traveler today.

~If you have a gym membership, then use it (and not just as a place to shower when the power is out). There are lots of people in America that can't afford food, let alone a membership. Get off your buttocks and go to the gym. Pack your bag and go. Plan for it and go. Put out that cigar and go.

~If you don't have a gym membership then get one. If you can't afford one then find an alternative to to gym. I've already given you ideas for free activities in an earlier posting.

~If you have legs, then use them (and not just as a means to get to the buffet or refrigerator). There are many people that wish they had legs as strong as ours because they either have legs that don't function or none at all. Be thankful for the large things in life like legs. Use them. Everyone in this group can walk. Everyone. No excuses (Okay, I'll make allowances for RU since he is on crutches).

~If every day seems chaotic, then take 30 minutes to sit down at the table after the kids have gone to bed, so you can plan how to; eat right, make a grocery list and how to get in some exercise. If you don't have an opportunity to do this at home, go have a cup of joe someplace less hectic and figure it out. You need to take a small amount of time to figure out what works. The time you take now to plan or prepare will pay dividends later.

~If your ability to walk is limited, take a 5 minute hike a few times a week. When you can handle more, then increase the duration. In the mean time, eat right and exercise your upper body. If you eat properly and do some kind of activity then you will lose weight. There are people out whose legs AND ARMS don't function. You are lucky it's only your legs that bother you.

Remember, Everyone believes that work is too long and our time off is too short. Everyone has problems with family, friends and co-workers. Everyone is shocked that money doesn't seem to go as far as it use to. Everyone.

I used to be one of the "glass is half empty" kind of people...and not so long ago, either. Now I am a "glass is half full" kind of guy. Why the change? The reality is that I am morbidly obese (when you are fat like I am, your BMI is probably higher than your credit rating) which is directly related to...to..to what? My diabetes.
Once again, with feeling, it will KILL me. Now I have lost my first 10%, I am a Biggest Loser. I am doing it. And, now that I feel better, I'm not pessimistic but OPTIMISTIC. What caused this change? I did...and if I can do it, YOU can do it.

Inspiration of the Day

Bumper Sticker Guy: [running after Forrest] Hey man! Hey listen, I was wondering if you might help me. 'Cause I'm in the bumper sticker business and I've been trying to think of a good slogan, and since you've been such a big inspiration to the people around here I thought you might be able to help me jump into - WHOA! Man, you just ran through a big pile of dog shit!

Forrest Gump: It happens.

Bumper Sticker guy: What, shit?

Forrest Gump: Sometimes.

Recipe of the Day

Variety is the spice of life. Check this out. If you want to lower your carb count, decrease the amount of honey to taste.

Life often seems to be getting us down. There are many things we can do to overcome those feelings. If you set a goal to push yourself One Step at a Time towards a healthier life, I think you will be surprised at the results. If that doesn't work then try a random act of kindness. Nothing makes a person feel better than to help others.

My small step for each day this week is to work out like there is NO TOMORROW. What is your small step?

Happy Trails!
